					<description>Thanks for the post, got it to compile.

One issue I had is that the make failed whenever I tried to compile with Ruby on my MBP. Turns out gcc was the -arch ppc flag to the Makefile. Here is how to get it work:

					<description>you seem to have eth1 correctly connected with an IP address of 192.168.1.105
you then have a GSM modem detected and attached to ttyUSB0
the device_19d2_1 is detected.
It seems to be correctly switched from usb_storage to a usbserial device (because that is a ubs disk and a modem)
Do you have the modem PIN enabled ? Did you set the username and password correctly ?

Do you have any other line after the last one in /var/log/syslog ?
You can try this manually with 2 xterms:
first xterm:
$ tail -f /var/log/syslog

second xterm:
$ sudo rmmod usbserial
$ sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0x0001
$ sudo /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/ttyUSB0 460800 persist noauth crtscts defaultroute usepeerdns debug user 'tmn' password 'tmn' connect '/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/chatscripts/ppp0'

try with a simple script in /etc/chatscripts/ppp0:
ABORT 'BUSY'
ABORT 'NO CARRIER'
ABORT 'ERROR'
'' AT
OK AT+CGATT=1
OK AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet"
OK      ATDT*99***1#</description>

					<description>New Tags insertion seems to be a problem because of the API. There was (last time I checked) no Wordpress entrance in the API (Movable Type, Blogger, etc) at xmlrpc.php.
You can post tags (space separated) but those not at the blog database will not be inserted by the API.</description>

					<description>@Boris, in Intrepid I got it working quite rapidly. It was just plug and play via NetworkManager. login 'tmn' and password 'tmn'. Yet remember, the modem is PIN enabled by default. Did you remove it ? Try to check what the logs report:

$ sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog</description>

					<description>Hi Pedro! You can always look at the rake db:migrate namespace. They have useful tasks for this kind of situations like

rake db:migrate:down
rake db:migrate:redo
rake db:migrate:reset
rake db:migrate:up

and others :)</description>

or with all the paths:

					<description>Andy,

did you include the Session module ? @state is the session variable, so you need to use the camping/session module. Something like this:

&lt;code&gt;
require 'camping'
require 'camping/session'

&lt;/code&gt; &lt;code&gt; Camping.goes :YourApp
&lt;/code&gt;
&lt;code&gt; module YourApp
include Camping::Session
end
&lt;/code&gt;

From here, your Models, Controllers, Views, Helpers, etc in this file, or in separate files.</description>

I'm getting an error using the @state.myerror variable:
"NoMethodError undefined method 'myerror' for nil:NilClass:"

Not using your last comment code, just the first one.</description>

					<description>Dan,

nice. One could even move from the string to an Hash, and create different CSS styles for different messages. Like a background (image/color) for Warnings, one other for Errors, etc.

&lt;code&gt;Error = {
  1 =&gt; {:class =&gt; 'e_nullfields', :msg =&gt; 'Fill all the required fields'},
  2 =&gt; {:class =&gt; 'e_dataexists', :msg =&gt; 'Duplicate data'}
}&lt;/code&gt;

Then lets set an error:

&lt;code&gt;@state.err = 1&lt;/code&gt;

Finally, the layout would take a:

&lt;code&gt;div(:class =&gt; Error[@state.err][:class]) { p Error[@state.err][:msg]; @state.err = ''; } unless @state.err.blank?&lt;/code&gt;</description>

					<description>Hi, i had some problems with ruby n-curses/curses threading. Insane. But your right, i should get back to it and give it a finish. The only problem to solve is really the shell gui part, meaning the ncurses. All the Twitter API is working fine.</description>

					<description>Ruben, Camping is a very intelligently done and lightweight Ruby web framework. I admire _Why's work and coding hability. Markaby is very very cool for the Views. One can use ActiveRecord, or "direct" SQL (via DBI, etc) for the Models.
Severall options: keep all the app packed up in one_single_file, or maintain independent ones, models.rb, controllers.rb, views.rb, helpers,rb, and others you want, like page_caching.rb, mysuperdupermethods.rb, etc...

It is possible to, in a few steps, "upgrade" a Camping web app to Ruby on Rails, so I keep that in mind when developing.
Some more reasons: the way Camping code is documented; the Ruby Gems it uses; the possibility to use FastCGI, Mongrel, or others; ActiveRecord inherited class with new methods; the R (Route) class for the Controllers; Views with Markaby for the xml/html rendering; hability to go Testing with Mosquito for the Controllers and Models;...

It isn't as complete as RoR, but the machines (servers) to run the apps do not need to be so power_hungry as the ones running RoR.

Of course, Camping needs much more "manual labor" than Ruby on Rails when developing and creating the environment, but i like that ;) Thanks to it, one needs to read lots of source code.

One hopes _Why The Lucky Stiff continues to work on Camping.rb (Jonas "zimbatm" Pfenniger is maintaining it too, although he is a FastCGI hater :D ). Quite a few RoR coders developed a passion for Camping, and some have apps done in it.

One single reason ? I feel I can control and understand the whole framework from source. I wonder which is the percentage of RoR developers that can do it.</description>

					<description>[POST UPDATE]

i had some emails asking about the creation of the mbox file.
Since I had older emails inside a complex hierarchical tree, a quick workaround to upload them all into the Gmail archive is to create a http://www.gnome.org/projects/evolution/features.shtml Search Folder in Evolution setting a rule for what you pretend. In my case:

All the messages with Date &lt; 1-1-2050

Apply the filter, and then all the messages get into that Search Folder scope.
Now, select them all and copy them into a new Inbox sub-folder, say, a 2upload folder (fortunatelly, Evolution didn't fire up the filter while doing the copy...). This will create a 2upload file:

$HOME/.evolution/mail/local/.../Inbox.sbd/2upload

The bigger sized is the only one you need, since Evolution will create indexes and other extension 2upload files. Now, depending on what Label settings you want in Gmail, have the mbox files created as you wish. As for maildir, yes, doable too, but i didn't need it.</description>

					<description>Oddly, this mashes the body of most messages when run under OS X leopard -- perhaps it has to do with the /r/n replacement. When I run this under Windows I had to make a change to explicitly use a "Time" type for the date in the imap.append call:

@imap.append(@folder, wrap_msg, nil, Time.parse(@msg.header["Date"]))

Otherwise, the date is stored properly (from the date in the body) but the IMAP create date (or whatever it's called) isn't set properly and thus the far right column in Gmail shows the IMPORT date instead of the "original" date.

Many thanks for the script! I'm happily using it to import my almost 1GB of messages.</description>

BDD is more specification driven. Its almost phylosophycal.
Did you see the Story plugin ? Is the path for RSpec, poetry specifications ?</description>

					<description>Cheers to that!! ;)

I agree Ruben. I dropped RedHat, then Fedora Core when it was on 4, to never again leave Debian. From time to time I install some other distro on a temp partition, but my working env. is Debian. And personnal env. And todo_all env. :)

My last answer to a friend that asked: "why don't you have a Mac ?"

- "...because i have Debian"

He barely knows what Linux is, and made silence. And i went along with that silence, and gave no more explanation. Grabbed my glass of wine, and kept silent. After some 30 minutes of other subjects, this comes out:

- "...what is Debian ?"

My first answer was: "it's a couple: Deborah and Ian". Then I amicably explained it all to him. Heh :)</description>

					<description>I confess I've tried almost all the Linux distributions in the world, but I can't find nothing like Debian. I just love it, love it, love it...

And it's true, although I'm running Etch on two servers, all my desktop / laptop machines are running Testing. And I found them to be pretty stable! But it's good to know that the Debian community are aware of this fact.

Long live to Debian :)</description>

					<description>"The list of software that can be used with Maildir is in fact much larger if you consider how this software can be plugged together, and the role of network access protocols.

The Sendmail MTA does not support any mail delivery format (although many assume that it does). Sendmail uses a separate delivery process called mail.local. Procmail (and other programs that support Maildir) can be used in place of mail.local, so Sendmail can rightly be said to support Maildir as much as it supports any other format."

As for "maximise the quality of email" i believe they are refering to this:
"For sites already running Sendmail but experiencing performance problems it can help to leave all the routing logic to Sendmail (with the configuration files developed over many years) but to do the intensive spam/malware processing with either Exim or Postfix."

					<description>Exim ?

You gotta be kidding, right ?
Doesn't even supports somke kind o Maildir like format.
I'd go faster on Sendmail.

By the way, what's the meaning of "maximise the quality of email" ?

					<description>after all, the "Code Purple" code is due to an HP script. This script tests some component codes to match a predefined value. If the value doesn't match, then hardware changes problably occurred. XP reinstall stops in this case. A very friendly Microsoft worker gave me a precious help on this. He refered some manufacturers are allowed to develop scripts to control some aspects of the global instalation. HP does it &lt;a href="http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/469752-code-purple-configuration-error-hp.html" rel="nofollow"&gt;this&lt;/a&gt; way: there is a script in

&lt;code&gt;C:\hp\bin\ConfigCheck\cfgchk.bat&lt;/code&gt;

The cfgchk.bat file contains the following:

c:\hp\bin\hpdmi r &gt; dmiout.txt
python c:\hp\bin\ConfigCheck\run.py
del dmiout.txt
cd ..
rd /s /q c:\hp\bin\ConfigCheck

I just deleted the run.py file using the Recovery Console. And it worked. The XP installation went on 'till the end. Microsoft was very kind to send me another Key so that i have a valid license again. I want to thank this very friendly and professional Microsoft worker. Not all MS workers resemble Steve Balmer, right ? heh...
Now i can again maintain my (ancient) Borland Delphi Windows apps to make my older clients happy clients. Yes, Delphi is an excellent (altough proprietary) platform to create very robust apps.</description>

Microsoft was very kind to send me another Key so that i have a valid license again. I want to thank this very friendly and professional Microsoft worker. Not all MS workers resemble Steve Balmer, right ? heh&#8230;<br />
Now i can again maintain my (ancient) Borland Delphi Windows apps to make my older clients happy clients. Yes, Delphi is an excellent (altough proprietary) platform to create very robust apps.

					<description>Thank you Bob. Does your book reference this rising vague of open source (software), the act of immediately sharing knowledge and innovation ? There is actually lots of innovation in open source software. One of the big issues is making revenue from this. HP that is now supporting Debian in their servers, in the Linux business area, managed to have some millions in revenue. I read some chapters and the book seams really interesting based on your experience.
Innovation through collaboration, use, discussion, team work, brainstorming gatherings, adaptations, puzzling, is very fun but not easy to achieve. Passing this to a business level is a great challenge. Sharing your experiences is very important, from startup's to large companies. Wishes to great success!</description>

					<description>Great blog! I know I am responding to this a bit late, but it's great to see dialogue about innovation. I'm Robert Price former CEO of Control Data. I recently wrote a book outlining the rise of Control Data and the innovative approach of Seymour Cray and the company as a whole. I believe, innovation is synonymous with problem solving, and the basic elements of innovation apply to any business. If you're interested in taking a look at the book it's available at www.bobprice.net. Have a great day!</description>

					<description>Vitor, they are betting on the ease of use and on self-service services. S3 is really self-service. You just need a credit card. As for marketing, these services are 90% developer oriented. All these services are presented as developer services. So... maybe they face their target as being auto-informed ? As an example, I heard of S3 by friends.
Jeff focused his talk on the empowerment of developers. Amazon wants developers to use their gigantic database of products and services to build new apps, new services, new forms of integration using the web-services made available. What for ? To sell more, of course. I see this as an excellent approach, as a win-win situation.
Yahoo, Google and some huge datacenters do spend a lot in marketing. Amazon is opening a back door to specialized people, for specialized services.
The creator of a startup company using S3 and EC2 said there is no contract between them and Amazon that can give assurance of 24/24 service. As far as he can tell, Amazon can close down S3 in T-30 days. What happens to the businesses using it ? That's why larger companies are a bit reluctant using these non-contract self-service services, payed by the month. Anyway, prices are real good for storage and bandwidth.
Or maybe this is the Beta stage "operandi" for Amazon: the wait and see. Upon sucess, go marketing.</description>

					<description>I am using Abiword 2.4.5 for Linux, and using Gnome plugins.
So, if you had macros, Word macros, it is likely that Abiword could not interpret them. But in these cases, usually, and most of the times, recovering the original content is a great help even if not contiguously. Remember Word .doc format is not an open one. So, if you had not complex formatting on the text...

If you are working on a very important document, i'd say to save it on the editor format, and from times to times, save a copy on an open format, just to have a safe copy of the content. Just in case... :)</description>

					<description>hey, thanks for the reply. i didn't catch it until now, sorry.

it was 2.4.6 i believe. i did rename it to a .doc and was able to open it, but it came up as like 50 pages of macros strokes or other such greek, with some of the original content in there, but not contiguously. very frustrating. i actually paid some online company to recover the document, but even that lost the bulk of the new content. eventully just rewrote the entire thing from scratch... not as fine a work as the original, but done and done.

turns out my mobo was having a meltdown, which cause all this. that's fixed now too. i would still like to see if the orginal documment can be recovered (or the .wbk merged with the original .doc) but that would just be for posterity. don't actually NEED it anymore. so no biggie. but thanks for the offer.

cheers,

My recent experience with AbiWord (that i use in Linux, besides OpenOffice) saving a 500MB Word backup file from a friend, that MS Word could not restore (not even OpenOffice), was worth to blog about, since it was given as an example of what this nice app can do. <description>[...] AbiWord saves the day for this blogger! I think it&#8217;s probably a consensus among the developers that our import/export support is one of our prouder accomplishments to date, and that includes making things work even when the input (such as in this case) is not necessarily entirely sane. This post by one of the libwpd developers (libwpd is the library used by AbiWord to help import WordPerfect documents) is another sign in this direction: Depending on your version of libwpd (2.4.6 for Windows will have it for sure at least), you may have better WordPerfect file loading support than WordPerfect itself!
